Exhibit & Display Acoustics

An acoustic challenge for Museums & Art Galleries

Museums, cultural spaces and galleries very often create special exhibitions or add audio to an existing exhibit. Special acoustical solutions are required to meet the needs of the museum or cultural space.

Excessive reverberation and echo combined with background noise can detract from the potential impact of the exhibit. Other challenges of exhibit acoustics include

  • Open large spaces with little or no acoustic isolation between exhibits

  • Multiple sound sources in close proximity

MICROPOLITICS OF NOISE

LAMBROS PIGOUNIS

Driven by his research in acoustic ecology in relation to the human body, Lambros Pigounis will be attempting to give physical form to the micropolitics of sound-signaling threats and to demonstrate the ways in which noise can be used as a form of violence that also shapes the soundscape of the future. He will create a long-durational situation in which his body is exposed to subsonic vibrational forces, triggered by the presence of people around him. Left in a state of constant threat for seven weeks, the body unconsciously experiences three kinds of fear-induced reactions: fight — flight — freeze.Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.”

The artistic exhibition required the construction of a platform that would “vibrate”.

Vibrations were reproduced by low frequencies of the artist’s pre-recorded soundscape synthesis reproduced by special subwoofers that were positioned under the platform.

The challenge was for the vibrations to be sensed during the performance of the artist while audience the interacted with the vibrating platform.

We designed a metal platform with special springs that allowed for vibrations
